CHRISTIAN ALBARRACÍN
Individuals of the City: Backs
In his series "Subjects of the City," Christian Albarracín examines human behavior within the urban landscape—portraying individuals as both unique and universal. His figures move through public spaces as silent actors in the ongoing performance of city life: sensitive, emotional, yet collectively bound by rhythm and routine. The work captures fleeting gestures, quiet pauses, and the tension between individuality and conformity in environments shaped by concrete, structure, and movement.
Through his project "Human Topographies," Albarracín continues this exploration by studying the human body as landscape. Each figure is meticulously modeled, scaled, and constructed through layer upon layer of hand-cut paper, in a technique the artist calls "three-dimensional compositions in layers of paper." Every line and contour is drawn, calculated, and assembled to evoke depth and motion, transforming paper into sculpture and form into emotion.
The result is a collection that transcends material expectations—where light, shadow, and dimension merge to reveal human presence in its most elemental state. Some works invite direct interaction, allowing viewers to engage physically and sensorially, breaking the traditional barrier between art and audience.
Through this tactile and contemplative process, Albarracín creates not only visual works, but human experiences—quiet reflections on identity, environment, and the fragile yet resilient essence of life in the modern city.
