John Sanchez

About the Artist

John Sanchez was born in Passaic, New Jersey and raised in North Bergen—a gritty, working-class town in Hudson County whose raw authenticity continues to shape his artistic lens. His paintings reflect a reverence for the overlooked: a dimly lit street at dusk, the quiet clutter of an interior, the flicker of life in forgotten corners. Grounded in observation and steeped in emotional resonance, his work invites viewers to slow down and rediscover the poetry in the everyday. Merging classical painting techniques with contemporary subject matter, Sanchez creates images that feel both intimate and universal—scenes that linger in memory and pulse with atmosphere. His canvases are not just visual records, but meditations on presence, place, and the stories hidden in plain sight. Sanchez received his foundational training at the renowned Art Students League of New York, and went on to earn a BFA from Miami International University of Art & Design and an MFA from Florida International University. His work has been collected by prominent figures including Debra and Dennis Scholl, Bill Bilowit and Grela Orihuela, Tom and Trish Kennedy, Carl Icahn, and Barry Sternlicht. He is represented in the permanent collections of the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Frost Art Museum, and was recently inducted into the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora. With an international collector base, Sanchez continues to live and work in South Florida.
